We come to you today surrounded by the ashes of or lives; the burnt remains of hopes, dreams, and plans gone before us. We offer our confession to you. We confess, on our arrogance, we thought we knew what you wanted. We placed our priorities in your mouth. We ignored the words of your prophets. It did not suit our understanding of who you were or what you came to do to talk of the just treatment of widows, orphans, or lowliest among us. Forgive us for missing the point. As we pray for our perspective and priorities to be reframed, we pray that these ashes, symbols of mortality, would remind us of the point you came to make and paid for with your life.
