You confront us this week with the preaching of John the Baptizer. He preaches Advent liberation to the spiritually comatose and comfortable across the span of time. May his words make us feel awkward and uncomfortable and move us to a place of self-examination and action. May we be reminded by the forerunner’s message that Advent is not a jaunt through Bethlehem’s posh living rooms but a muddy crawl to an impromptu delivery room. May we be reminded that Advent isn’t about what we pick up, but what we can let go of, so we may come closer to the infant Jesus.
